2023 Spain Trip – Sabbatical II – A Coruña
A Coruña – History Meets the Atlantic Breeze
Nestled along the rugged coast of Northern Spain, A Coruña combines history, natural splendor, and urban vitality. The moment I arrived, the sight of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the cliffs, framed by the charming Galician city, left me breathless. I must admit, my choice of accommodation was influenced by this breathtaking view, a privilege of modern travel tools and web sites.
To the northwest of downtown A Coruña stands the legendary Hercules Tower, a Roman marvel and the world’s oldest working lighthouse. Its enduring stone walls have braved centuries of maritime challenges, now aided by modern electrical systems that continue to guide ships safely through the night.
The surrounding Parque Escultarico da la Torre de Hercules offers a serene escape. A leisurely stroll along the Promenade reveals captivating views of the coastline, where the invigorating sea breeze mingles with the ever-changing hues of the Atlantic. And as a absolute must: Be there at sunset (I did it every day and I like every minute of it, especially also the foggy day). Tranquil spots around the Tower invite moments of contemplation, while a small beach near my hotel provided a perfect retreat for a post-sunset dip in the sea.
As the day draws to a close, A Coruña streets beckon locals and visitors alike, converging in countless cervecerias, bars, and restaurants scattered throughout the city. In my pursuit to dine where the locals do. So, if you chance upon a cozy spot – seize it. Here, you can relish in the flavors of Galician cuisine, from succulent seafood to hearty regional specialties.
A Coruña, with its maritime history, natural allure, and dynamic culture, has etched a lasting impression on my Northern Spain adventure. As I prepare for a short excursion to Santiago de Compostela, I’m eager to uncover what this next stop has in store.
